Google Wave Update - Web Wave Update

Google Wave

Build a site like this now!

Google wave left me speechless with excitement when I first saw the video introduction. Straightaway I went and registered for an invitation thinking it might be months before I received it. I thought then, and I still do, that Google Wave will change the way we communicate as much as email has, maybe more.

I assume you've already seen the 80 minute wave video which announced the new project. If you haven't I suggest you get yourself a cup of something and sit down NOW and watch it here. You really do need to see what's in store for you. If you aren't excited about Google wave, you obviously haven't seen this video.

If you really don't have enough time to watch the long video, click on the embedded video below to at least get a taste of what it's all about.

Even as I type this I'm trying to comprehend the extend of the possibilities and I know I cannot. The demonstration showed how it was intended to include maps, videos and gadgets along with the conversation, all in a collaborative platform, in real time! It's like email, instant messaging, and blogging rolled into one and put on steroids.

I really believe that the Google wave will revolutionize the way we communicate over the web. It has been a one of contention with the luddites among us that there are no letter, diaries and documents left behind when we're gone for future generations to study and analyze. Blogs often fall into the trap of being self centred, self serving and rambling. Since the wave is a conversation, I think waves may remain around long after the contributors are gone. They will be saved, archived and indexed. Maybe before you start you might consider what you contribute, it may come back to haunt you.

I keep reading comments from naysayers, there are always some, "The UI is too busy", "It's very messy.", "Google Wave is terrible!" To them I say, it's still being developed, saying banal things like that is like inspecting a new car you've been given, which runs on air and never needs maintenance and saying "I really don't like the color!"

The idea of being able to embed a wave on a webpage is masterly, see the embedded public wave below! But how sad that people like the guy who made the video, and me and you, can't even begin to experience this get new tool, unless you have an invite. So I had an idea! I have a few invites which are just sitting in waiting for someone to take advantage of them.

So I hit on a plan. All you need to do is write a short piece to impress me so much that I'll grant you one of those wishes, I mean invitations. I was feeling a little like a genie for a minute there.

Below you'll see a form to fill in. You can tell me why you want a Google Wave invitation (no unseemly begging please), what you intend to do with it and why I should give you one of these, so precious, invites. I heard they were being offered at $150 on eBay! Remember that if and when you receive an invitation, assuming the previous practice continues, you will have twenty five (25!) Google Wave invitations to pass along to your friends. Before long these will either run out, or everyone will have 20 each, but in the meantime I have them, you want them!

Why Do You Want An Invite So Badly?

We all know how scarce Google Wave Invites are right now. However I have some to share. I could sell them on eBay, but I don't consider that quite right. So I'm giving them away to people who can impress me that they will use them for something interesting.

I will be posting the best articles on the website for everyone to see, so make them good. The more entertaining it is, the more likely you are to get an invitation. Although just because your submission gets posted doesn't necessary mean you'll be a lucky winner.
