Google Nexus one

The Google Nexus One device is a reality! It amazes me how fast things appear on the market now. When I was a kid, a long time ago, you would see something innovative and exciting on television and think how great it would be actually use item. However if there was any real expectation of this technology being used in a day to day device, it would be many months, probably years before it would appear.

I can remember seeing an episode of Tomorrows World which detailed an incredible sound canceling idea. It may have been Raymond Baxter, the exact details are rather dim now, who explained how a microphone picked up the noise of the offending generator and a speaker blasted the sound, out of phase, in his direction. The idea was simple but very clever, the sound from the speaker significantly cancelled out the noise from the generator.

How times have changed. A few months ago rumors surfaced that Google was planning to launch a new Android phone called the Google Nexus One. There were many opinions, a huge wave of speculation, but very little real information. Several weeks ago the rum ours strengthened but even in the run up to Christmas very little seemed to be known about the device.

On December 23th I saw a 'scoop' which said, "the Nexus One is one poorly kept secret. Google employees spilled the juice the moment they got their hands on it via Twitter and other outlets" the excitement was mounting.

On December 29th the gurus said, "Google employees have since confirmed that the company will market the Nexus One, which was built by HTC based on Google's specs," would it be $200, $800, would it be announced at the International Consumer Electronics Show?

Even when Google called a press conference at the Googleplex for yesterday, January 5th at 10am, it wasn't certain that a new era in cell phones was about to be announced. The Google Nexus One was announced, the details demonstrated and the website went live!

I deliberated for a couple of hours, should I really spend $530 on a phone? I folded at about 3.45pm and ordered it online. I got a confirmation email, then late last night I got an email saying it had been shipped via Fedex.

At 10.59am, while I was still typing this, there was a knock on the door and the lady from Fedex handed me a package which I'm about to unpack.

Unboxing the Google Nexus One

I really which Raymond Baxter was here to help me unpack it, because it has one of the less significant features, two microphones, one of which is used to play the ambient sounds, out of phase, into the earpiece to help its use in noisy environments.
